FARMERS ARE THE FUTURE!

Lookout Farmers Market: East Brainerd location open

“Our vendors are hurting like many other people right now,” says Lookout Farmers Market manager Jim Abernathy. “They have produce and products that people need and want and that they need to sell.”

That’s why Abernathy decided to reopen LFM’s East Brainerd location that had closed because of COVID-19 – but with a few modifications.

“We’ll have curbside shopping,” says Abernathy. “People can pull up, tell us what they want and we’ll do the shopping for them and bring it to their car.”

People will also be able to get out and shop in the open-air market. Abernathy says he and his vendors will keep an eye out for proper social distancing and gloves will be available for those who wish to use them.

Another component of the market during the COVID-19 crisis will be putting together produce packages for the elderly and others facing extra challenges. There will be a sign-up sheet where market customers can list the name and address of someone in need and at the end of the day, Abernathy will make up bags with produce that hasn’t sold and deliver them within the Chattanooga area to people on the list. “I’m happy to do that and help some people out,” he says.

The Lookout Farmers Market-East Brainerd is located at Christ United Methodist, 8645 E. Brainerd Rd.
Chattanooga, TN, every Tuesday from 4 PM to 7 PM.

Some of the products people can find include tomatoes (from Abernathy’s family farm in Florida), zucchini, squash, greens and micro greens, many other vegetables, apples, berries and other fruits, local honey, jams, nuts, elderberry juice, goat milk and cheese, homemade breads, salsa, chow chow, spices, cakes and pies, homemade soaps, oils and lotions, as well as a variety of crafts and textile goods.

Abernathy says he’s been getting a lot of calls from vendors and the market is in a good location for customers. He says he expects the market to grow each week. “Grocery stores are packed with people right now and out of a lot of items. This is a good way to find locally grown and made items you need in a pretty safe environment.”
